The Street

Talat Noi, meaning small market, claims it is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Thailand, therefore it is hiding many narrow streets and alleyways waiting to be explored. Early in its known history, it was a busy port that serves as the bridge between Thailand and international trade. It was first settled by Chinese and Portuguese Catholics, and later on Thais. Giving the area a unique blend of ethnicity and culture as evident in the video (you will see church, shrines and temples). It sits on the opposite bank of our previous walk, Itsaraphap. As international trade moved to Klong Toei, Talat Noi got a new life as the junk yard of Thailand. Selling chopped up car parts. In modern day, the street has been transformed into a tourist destination with cafes, hostels, restaurants and galleries dotting the street while maintaining the local vibes and occupants from its previous era.

The Photography

Today we are taking a different approach. I have a relatively big photobook collection from which I draw inspiration to improve my work. A couple of months back I was browing online for a new one and came across the works of Kazuyuki Kawaguchi. More precisely, his Prospect series that focuses on documenting the common sights and banalities found across Japan. What drew me in to this series were the quiet, errie and the documentative nature of it. It feels like a record of things as-is before time changes them. This is coincides with my own on-going project of documenting Thailand, or where ever I find myself to ensure things are not lost to time and decay.
